The bell is the most important sound-producing component of a mellophone. Depending on the shape and material of the bell, the tonal color of the instrument can be changed. Nickel silver produces a bright sound, while gold brass produces a soft, dark sound. The heavier the bell is, the darker and warmer the sound becomes.
